More info

What is cancer? Why are there cancers that can be cured and others that cannot? Will there soon be more effective treatments? These and many other questions related to the disease are answered in Desarmando al cáncer, the first educational book to be published by the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), which includes work by the scientific journalist Mónica G. Salomone and the photographer Amparo Garrido.

Desarmando al cáncer explains the main areas of cancer research being explored around the world, from the point of view of knowledge, prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Everything is explained in articles and interviews with some of the world’s leading cancer researchers, who work at CNIO, and is full of infographics, timelines and related data.

The book summarises CNIO’s main scientific achievements, since its creation in 1998, and describes the main challenges facing us in the next few years, amongst which are how to work together with the pharmaceutical industry and how to develop its clinical programme. CNIO’s director, María Blasco, sums up the challenges in the prologue: “We are going to continue making fundamental discoveries to advance oncology, making it easier for patients to benefit from them as soon as possible.”
